How this result was calculated
- Material cost per package = 0.85 + 0.25 + 0.08 + 0.04 + 0.12 = 1.34 USD.
- Waste applies to materials only: 1.34 × 5% = 0.067 USD. Labor = 1.5 min ÷ 60 × 18 = 0.45 USD.
- Batch total = 500 × 1.857 + 50 fixed setup = 978.5 USD. Divide by 500 for unit cost.
- Price with markup = unit cost × (1 + 25 ÷ 100). This is markup on cost, not gross margin.

All starting rates are editable examples, not live market prices. Replace every rate with your own supplier and labor costs.
Zero costs are allowed. Batch quantity must be at least one so the per-package calculation is defined.
Taxes, shipping, depreciation and non-packaging product costs are excluded unless you include them in the input rates or fixed cost. Currency selection changes the label only.
How to use this tool
Add the per-package material costs and apply the selected material waste allowance. Labor per package = minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate. Batch total = quantity × variable cost per package + fixed batch cost. Divide by quantity for the full cost per package.
A worked example
If materials cost 1.50 per package, waste is 10%, labor takes 2 minutes at 18 per hour, and fixed setup costs 25 for 100 packages, variable cost is 2.25 each. The batch costs 250, or 2.50 per package. A 20% markup gives 3.00.
Put the result to work
All amounts are user-entered or illustrative; no market price feed is used. Currency changes the display label, not exchange rates. The waste allowance applies to the modeled material costs. Shipping charges, taxes, duties, storage, returns, and other overhead are excluded unless you include them explicitly.

What is the difference between fixed and variable cost?
A fixed batch cost is incurred once for the batch. Variable costs are multiplied by the number of packages. Larger batches spread the same fixed cost across more packages.
Is markup the same as profit margin?
No. A 20% markup multiplies cost by 1.20. A 20% gross margin requires dividing cost by 0.80. This tool's selling-price option uses markup.
Are the default costs current supplier prices?
No. Defaults are examples. Replace them with your own purchase costs, usage rates, and labor assumptions.
